My Favorite Place.. Sri Lanka

Over the years I've had the opportunity to travel to over 15 different countries and experience many different cultures. Out of every place I've visited, only one has a truly special place in my heart.

My parents and grandparents grew up in Sri Lanka and although I've never actually lived there I consider it to be a second home. The culture I grew up with, the delicious food I get to eat, and all the inside jokes that come with being a part of this culture is what made me who I am. Not to mention the country is gorgeous with tropical beaches and vibrant green tea plantations stretching across the mountains. If I could only travel to one place for the rest of my life, this would be it.

  1. It is so great to have someone in class this semester with a special connection to Sri Lanka like this, Joanna! Fabulous! Maybe you will even want to do a Lanka-inspired project for this class. It is an incredibly important part of the Ramayana, of course, and it is also home to a great storytelling tradition of its own; there's an amazing collection of over 250 folktales from Sri Lanka here for example: Village Folktales of Ceylon... all free to read online! So if that is something you are interested in reading, you could certainly do that; that's what the extra reading option is there for. Beautiful country, beautiful stories! :-)

  2. I am in awe that you have been to so many countries, how exciting and wonderful for you! Sri Lanka must be special, indeed, to top your list. I am always interested in local food and cuisine, and you mention you love their food there. What are some of your favorite dishes? I hope you are able to post photos of Sri Lanka that you took while visiting. I'll look forward to it!
